According to the latest Market Trends newsletter from HSH.com, the overall average rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell by 0.02% last week to an average of 3.98%. The 15-year companion also managed a 0.02% fall, slipping back to 3.26%. FHA-backed 30-year fixed-rate mortgages remained considerably below 30-year conforming rates but also slipped 0.02%, dipping to 3.73% for the week ending May 22. Finally, the overall 5/1 Hybrid ARM fell by 0.04% to 2.97%. It’s no surprise that mortgage rates have been so up and down in recent months since economic activity and inflation have followed a similar pattern.
